How to Select a Conditioner

In the same vein as my recent How to Select a Shampoo post, I'm back with a post to describe my process for selecting a conditioner. This process is a lot easier because there are so many great conditioners out there.

Absence of  Drying Alcohols

This doesn't happen often but some conditioners still contain drying alcohols like isopropyl, benzyl, and alcohol denat. (denatured alcohol). Sometimes these alcohols are reeeeeeeeeally down the list, indicating that they may be there as a preservative. If it's high up on the list...no ma'am!

Absence of Cheap Fillers

Mineral Oil and Petroleum aren't being talked about as much as they used to be. These ingredients are cheap fillers that don't really provide moisture to your hair. I will use a product with one of these ingredients if it is again, at the bottom of the ingredients list of an otherwise moisturizing product.

Water as The First Ingredient

Water is THE ultimate moisturizer so it only makes sense that you'd want to use a product with it in the highest concentration. The higher up an ingredient appears on the ingredients list, the more that ingredient is present in the product.

Fatty Alcohols

I love to see fatty alcohols high up on the ingredients list. These are really moisturizing. Look for cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl, etc.

Oils

Oils are not a must but they can help boost the previously mentioned moisturizing ingredients. Some products moisturize just fine without oils but I will usually seal in the moisture from those products with a little oil anyhow.

What are some things that you look for in a good conditioner?
