Video | As I Am Collective Product Review

You never know who is watching your videos and this review is proof of that. The folks over at As I Am's parent company were nice enough to send me some of their products to try. You saw me use them in a recent wash and go video. However, the review is "king" on my channel so I was sure to bring you a review of the products featured in that video.

Let me know if you'd like a review of some of the other products. There are more where these came from!

Product Review: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

I'm back with more product reviews and more Shea Moisture! This time I'm focusing on the Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo. I make reference to the Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo since I have tried that one as well. The ingredients can be found in the video description on the YouTube watch page. Product Review: As I Am Products (FINALLY!!)

It has taken me nearly 3 whole weeks to use all of these As I Am samples. I randomly purchased a sample pack from them last year for less than $5 and it came with a sample of almost all of their products! Because there are so many products to share I will be grouping them based on how I liked them and leaving the ingredients out. Here goes!

The Good

Smoothing Gel - $8 for 8oz
This stuff smells great and is very thick and sticky. The ingredients list--as far as I can tell--is silicone and alcohol free. The gel held my hair just as well as eco styler olive oil gel. The only thing that would hold me back from purchasing this is that there are other super cheap gels with the same properties on the market: eco, ic fantasia, gorilla snot, etc.

DoubleButter Cream - $15.50-28.00 for 8oz-16oz
This stuff is creamy and rich. It provided great moisture.

Twist Defining Cream - $13-22 for 8oz-16oz
This product is super thick, creamy, and moisturizing. I can feel that it has a bit of hold as well. Used it to style twist and rubbed it over them a week later before untwisting for a twist out.

CocoShea Spray $15 for 4oz
A friend bought this for me in the full size so I took the sample traveling. This spray is moisturizing and provides shine. It is perfect for keeping twists moisturized and with very little frizz.

The Not Too Bad

Curling Jelly - $13-22 for 8oz-16oz
Used this product as a styler for a braid out. The braid out came out very nicely and survived a light rain while I entered and exited church. As for how long the style lasted, it made it to day 3, but desperately needed to be refreshed. My hair is also a bit dry <--could be the DB cream or the Jelly's fault.

Curl Clarity Shampoo - $12 for 8oz
I think this is a clarifying shampoo, but it does not have silicones. It is very thin and clear like water. It was easy to lather up (there is lather) and it was easy to rinse. My hair came out clean.

Leave-In Conditioner - $10.50 for 8oz
I do like this stuff. It has a very thin "shampoo-like" consistency and spreads very well. I had about half a packet left after applying this stuff to my hair. The next day my air dried hair has a nice little sheen to it and is soft to the touch. I will be using this again as I comb out my stretched hair before preparing to trim.

Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner - $16 for 8oz
I really liked the texture of this product. It feels like a body butter and melts when you rub it in your hands. It "wets" the hair when it is applied and my hair felt very nice when I finished conditioning. The product had some slip but not an amazing amount. I also liked the smell.

The Ugly

Coconut Cowash - $8 for 16oz
No sir, no ma'am. I did not like this stuff. The texture was cool, it felt like a mix between shaving cream and conditioner. Application was fine and it did not lather--as expected anyhow. It was the actual rinsing that gave me problems. I am very obsessive when I rinse my hair. I take time and make sure everything is out, even scratching my scalp to "test" the cleanliness. This cowash failed the test and took a lot of my time. I just don't feel like my hair is as clean as it could be.

Moisture Milk - $16 for 8oz
This is a lot like water. It didn't dry my hair out but neither did it wow me.

Aubrey Organics: Product Comparisons

In this video, I wrap up my reviews of the Aubrey Organics products by comparing and ranking them.

Best Texture: GPB & Rosa Mosqueta
Best Smell: GPB & Rosa Mosqueta
Best Lather: Blue Camomile
Best Rinse: All except Blue Camomile
Favorite Overall: GPB

The Aubrey Conditioners all sink in and detangle fairly well. I just prefer more "juicy" conditioners, but they are not bad. Overall, I think the brand is a bit pricey, especially when you can get similar products for much less (ie. Giovanni, Trader Joe's, Shea Moisture).

Product Review: Aubrey Organics Blue Camomile Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner

I am now over halfway through my little Aubrey trial. So far I have had an ok experience with the shampoos and have liked the conditioners--though I'd love if they were super coating and slippery. Hang in there for this review because I feel a little differently about the Blue Camomile.

Their Promise:
Shampoo
Give your hair a new attitude. Lather in softness and shine with this naturally hydrating shampoo made with exotic, organic blue camomile and shea butter. Refreshing formula lightly conditions as it cleanses to leave hair full, silky and manageable.

Conditioner
Complete your hair’s new attitude with this light, moisturizing conditioner that gives you healthy control and shine without weighing down your style. Fragrant, organic blue camomile and aloe condition and rehydrate, while milk protein and silica-rich horsetail strengthen and pamper your hair, leaving it soft and manageable.

Ingredients:

Shampoo

Aqua, decyl glucoside, aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf juice*, sodium cocoyl hydrolyzed soy protein, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter)*, oryza sativa (rice) extract*, glycerin, citrus grandis (grapefruit) extract, tanacetum annuum (Moroccan blue camomile) oil*, glyceryl linoleate, glyceryl linolenate, alcohol denat. (38b, lavender*), tocopheryl acetate, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) water, equisetum hyemale (horsetail) extract, tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) leaf extract, ascorbic acid, glycine soja (soybean) oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta-carotene.

Aqua, cetyl alcohol (coconut fatty alcohol), aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf juice*, alcohol denat., helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, milk protein, glycerin, equisetum hyemale (horsetail) extract, tussilago farfara (coltsfoot) leaf extract, tanacetum annum (Moroccan blue camomile) oil*, brassica campestris (turnip) oil, aleurites fordi (chinawood) oil, citrus grandis (grapefruit) extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), glycine soja (soybean) oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta-carotene.
*Organic

Price:
~$10

My Opinion:
Okay, this shampoo is clear with a green tint, much thicker than the other two I have tried (Honeysuckle Rose , GPB) and smells of new shoes. Yes, new shoes! This shampoo lathers just as well as the GPB but it doesn't rinse as well as either of the other shampoos I tried. I tend to lightly scratch my hair as I rinse it just to make sure my scalp is clear and I kept coming away with the underside of my nails full of gunk. I did not experience this just the week before with GPB. I think it may have to do with shea butter being within the first five ingredients of the shampoo. This is the first Aubrey shampoo that has been a definite no go for me.

The conditioner is a pearly white and stayed true to Aubrey conditioner standards. It soaks right into the hair and allowed me to run a comb through my hair (note: The comb and shower conditioner are always part of my second detangling. You may need more slip if you do not pre-detangle.) I also noticed curl definition in the areas of my hair that curl. Just like GPB, I had a lot of shine.

Rating:
Shampoo: --0-- of 3 No Go
Conditioner: ♥♥of 3 Good - Y'all know I prefer more slip and slide than these conditioner offer

Price:
Shampoo - $10.48
Conditioner - $17.83

My Opinion:
Both the shampoo and conditioner have a men's after shave smell. After being in your hair for a while it does fade to something more gender neutral and soft. Just at the smell alone I was liking this shampoo and conditioner pair better than the honeysuckle rose that I tried last week. The shampoo had a slightly grainy texture and was a gold-ish color. Just like honeysuckle rose, GPB cleaned without stripping and was easy to rinse.

I had a similar experience with this conditioner to the previous Aubrey conditioner I tried. It soaked right into the hair instead of coating it and being super slippery like a lot of other conditioners. I was able to detangle my hair with it but remember that I do detangle my hair some before I get in the shower and detangle it again. When I came from the shower my hair was super shiny.

I really liked the shampoo but I prefer a gooey, slippery conditioner.

Rating:

/3 Good - I'd get the shampoo but leave the conditioner even though it's okay.

Price:
$10 - $11

My Opinion:
I started off with previously deep conditioned and finger detangled hair when I used the shampoo. I was surprised when it came out runny and clear. I am usually put off by clear shampoos because they tend to be stripping. The smell of the shampoo reminded me of lemon scented cleaning products. This is a natural shampoo so it did not suds up and because there were no suds it rinsed very cleanly from  my hair. My hair wasn't dry or stripped but didn't feel like "buttah" either.

Next, I moved on to the conditioner. It smelled like the unscented version of the lemon cleaning product from the shampoo. The conditioner soaks right into the hair. It is not super slippery and neither does it coat the hair but yet I was able to tool detangle my hair in the shower. The conditioner works well, but I just like the mental satisfaction of my hair coated in juicy conditioner.

Overall, I do like this shampoo and conditioner but they did not WOW me.

Rating:
♥ ♥ /3 Good - I'd buy it if some of my other options were unavailable.

7oz Cream - $33

My Opinion:
I used the shampoo and conditioner as directed, then loaded my hair with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration to detangle. Then I rinsed and allowed my hair to airdry overnight. In the morning I applied the cream to my still damp hair and pulled my hair back into my puff bun.

I noticed that the shampoo had a clean and soapy scent. It was also a very thick consistency which worried me because I have issues getting shampoo out of my hair if it's thick. The shampoo did its job and I got most of it out except for a little in the front but that was rinsed away after I finished with the conditioner.

Now for the conditioner--I may be a wierdo--but I felt that it smelled like hotel lotion. lol. It went on smoothly and didn't leave my hair dry but certainly wasn't thick enough to detangle with. It also "pulled" out the rest of the shampoo left over.

That cream...oh that cream. I absolutely love it! There is a reason it has received an allure beauty award. It is non-greasy and you do not need a lot of it. It also doesn't have a strong or overpowering scent. I used it on damp hair and will continue to use it throughout the week as my moisturizer.

Bottom line, I was not blown away by these products with the exception of the cream. They did the job and that was about it. I think this line would be great if I were all natural and wearing my hair down because my hair's texture is more "noticeable" and fluffy. They are a bit too rich for my blood though. If you don't mind the cost, Fekkai won't hurt you.

Product Review: The Jane Carter Solution - Moisture Nourishing Shampoo

Their Promise:
This shampoo gently cleanses your hair and scalp, restoring your hair's proper moisture balance. Moisture Nourishing Shampoo is a natural shampoo with extracts of Coltsfoot, Lemon Balm, and Myrrh. This unique combination infuses moisture into your hair, leaving it incredibly shiny and bouncy. It smells terrific and is gentle enough for daily use, plus it's paraben free!

Directions:
Apply to wet hair. Massage a small amount into a lather and gently work through the hair. Rinse and repeat until hair is thoroughly clean. Towel dry and follow with Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner.

Ingredients:
Deionized Water, Certified Organic Aloe Vera, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Glucoside, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine, PolyQuaterium 7, Glycol Stearate, Glycerin, Wheat Protein, Wheat Amino Acids, Tocopherol, Lecithin, Panthenol, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Potassium Sorbate, ,Citric Acid.

Price:
$8

My Opinion:
When I first opened the product it had a light citrus-y smell. I really like the way this product smells. Though it contains sulfates, it didn't strip my hair ANYWHERE near as much as the Organix had. It did the job. The only strike against it is the consistency. It is super thick! I have thick hair and it is difficult to rinse out thick products. My man also used this shampoo and he too thought it was kind of thick. However, this can be fixed with a little water to dilute it.
