Video | How I Scalp Massage for FASTER hair growth

If you are new to me, you may not be aware that I have on several occasions grown my hair at a rate above what is considered average. I did a 6 inches in 6 months challenge and I recently did a hair update after cutting away a lot of my hair. Spoiler: I've already grown nearly a year's worth of hair back.

In my latest video, I share the exact massage technique that I used to achieve this growth.

Video | My Vitamin Regimen For Healthy Hair

I have an on again, off again relationship with this vitamin regimen. I'll be on it for several months and then I'll stray for no particular reason. This regimen is meant to mimic the ingredients of expensive hair vitamins.

Dusting | January 2017

At the beginning of 2017 I twisted my hair up in preparation for my first "dusting" since my hair cut back in November of 2016. It's only been two months but I wanted to get my hair on a rememberable dusting schedule. I can easily remember Jan-Apr-Jul-Oct.

What is dusting?

Dusting is a trim in which so little hair is taken off that it looks like dust on the floor. In my case it looks like dust on the sheet of notebook paper. Dusting is a great way to maintain between official trims. It is also helpful for people who want to maintain healthy ends without actually trimming at all.

Dusting has not hindered my hair progress at all. I made this side by side comparison pic. On the left, my hair had just been cut. On the right, I had just finished dusting. I recoreded my hair's measurements for both of these months (because numbers don't lie!) and there is some good growth!

Video | How to Retain Length With a Wash and Go

In what video, I don't remember, I mentioned something about length retention and wash and goes. This prompted two viewers to request tips on just how to retain length while wearing wash and goes. In this video, I share 5 tips that aid in keeping what you are growing!

The overall theme of the video--if you don't catch anything else--is keep your hair healthy, moisturized, and tangle free. If you keep this in mind with everything you do in your regimen, you'll be retaining in no time!

Video | Protein & Moisture Balance | STOP THE BREAKAGE

We talk so much about styling and products in the natural hair community, but a major key to length retention and reduced breakage is getting your protein and moisture in balance. I myself have struggled with this in the past.

In my most recent video I share the signs of protein or moisture overload and what you can do to treat and prevent an imbalance.

Video | Maxi Hair Maximized Vitamins | PRODUCT REVIEW

Back during the 6 inches in 6 months challenge, I began taking these Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins about half way through. I decided to do a review of them after taking two bottles worth over the challenge. Plus, I don't think I've ever done a review of a hair vitamin before.

Video | I Cut My Hair!

I will admit that the title of my newest video seems a bit on the click bait side. However, I can assure you that I am telling the truth. I really did take a few inches off of my hair. It was in the best interest of length retention and overall hair health.

Now, this video is a bit late. I have already grown back an inch since I did the cut. I intend to grow right on past this. As they say, "If you love something, let it go." Let it go is exactly what I did with these ends and I have already been rewarded.

The lesson learned here is that I need to regularly trim my ends to keep my hair retaining length. I will trim again in a few months. Hopefully this much hair won't need to go next time!

I finally finished the 6 inches in 6 months challenge...but you already knew that because you are a blog reader and you rock! You probably know all of the ups and downs that I've had on this challenge; however, in this new video I lay out what really worked to double my hair's growth rate.

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 6

This has been a looooooooong ride but it is finally over. During this month, I trimmed cut my hair due to the breakage that was happening in the other check-ins. My hair went from line 10, to line 9, then to line 8 in the most recent check. I had enough and went at my hair with the scissors. I had no goal length or style in mind. I just cut what needed to go. I evened everything out with a combed-straight-back ponytail cut.

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 6

The damage? My new cut put me at line 6. So, I cut two inches off of my hair at the beginning of this month. Now, as far as the challenge, I introduced a multi-vitamin that had more to do with health than hair, managed to actually do the greenhouse effect, and stuck to the inversion method. I was here and there with the daily scalp massaging.

I was actually surprised when my hair grew an inch this month! #winning Moving on from this challenge, I will continue to take a multi-vitamin and biotin and I may do the inversion method. I have learned a lot about my hair and plan to make a wrap up video with all of the pictures and a detailed description of all of the tactics used in this challenge,

What I Was Doing

Scalp massages (sort of) daily
Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nail Gummies daily
Country Life®’s Core Daily®-1 Women multi-vitamin daily
Inversion Method at the beginning of the month
Greenhouse effect at the end of the month

What I Will Continue To Do

Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nail Gummies daily
Country Life®’s Core Daily®-1 Women multi-vitamin daily
Inversion Method at the beginning of the month

Video | Growing it Back | April 2016 Length Check

If you like what you read on my blog be sure to support by subscribing to me on bloglovin', commenting below, and sharing via the social media links. New posts every Monday, Wednesday, and sometimes Friday!

These length checks are beginning to be "popcorn eating" worthy. There's always a surprise in there. This check involved my growing back the hair that had broken off before my October 2015 length check. My hair is still under the usual length retention for this period of time and I think it is due to breakage.

In the months in between the checks displayed on this video I had a lot of ups and downs.
My hair grew all the way down to the number 10 line, then broke off an inch each month until it landed on the number 8 line.

So though it looks like I gained 2 inches on the video, the behind the scenes shows that I actually lost length and would have been past the final line 11 on this shirt.

It almost goes without saying...I need a trim.

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 5

If you like what you read on my blog be sure to support by subscribing to me on bloglovin', commenting below, and sharing via the social media links. New posts every Monday, Wednesday, and sometimes Friday!

The third time's the charm, right? Once again on this challenge I have not gained any length. My hair has stalled out on ln 8. I will admit that I did not really go in on the challenge this month. I did not do scalp massages in the week before the end of the month because I wanted my sleek bun to stay sleek. I then didn't do the GHE the final week because I was traveling and didn't want to explain the plastic on my head to my mom, lol. I also discontinued the oil once I had used up the rest of it.

Honestly, I am tired of this challenge and ready to trim my hair. I believe I have a good balance between protein and moisture but my ends need to be renewed and refreshed. For the end of this challenge I am going back to the Nature's Bounty Gummies. The reasoning behind that can stand alone as it's own post. I'm not thrilled with the gelatin in the gummies but...*sigh*

What I Was Doing

Scalp massages until the end of the month
Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins daily
Peppermint/Grapeseed Oil every other day until it ran out
Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month

What I Will Continue To Do

Scalp massages daily
Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nail Gummies daily
Inversion Method at the beginning of the month
Greenhouse effect at the end of the month

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 4

If you like what you read on my blog be sure to support by subscribing to me on bloglovin', commenting below, and sharing via the social media links. New posts every Monday, Wednesday, and sometimes Friday!

For the second consecutive month on this challenge, there has been no miracle growth. Last month I wasn't really on the challenge like I should have been. This month I stuck with it but did not see results. I am noticing that the oil is beginning to build up on my scalp and is getting more difficult to remove. This may be slowing my growth. I've done a peppermint oil challenge in the past during which I received no results. So, I am thinking of finishing up the premixed peppermint oil I have then discontinuing the scalp oiling for the remainder of the challenge. I just don't like buildup!

What I Was Doing

  • Scalp massages nearly daily (yay!)
  • Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins daily
  • Peppermint/Grapeseed Oil every other day (only missed 1-2 days!)
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month
  • GHE for the last week of the month

What I Will Continue To Do

I will continue to do what got me to this point. I just have to be just as "on it" as I was for February. As stated above, I will be phasing out the peppermint oil. Other than that, I think I can stick this thing out for another two months!

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 3

The #BlackGirlMagic has come to a rolling stop, y'all. This month of the challenge I slacked on the massages, missed a couple of oilings, and forewent the GHE because my wash and go won't fit under the cap. In this progress photo you won't find any miraculous hair growth like I've been experiencing. I will add that I usually do these checks after I have styled my wash and go to help me get the full length of my hair. I pull down the hairs that are long and hanging. However, this time I was not wearing a wash and go so my check is "gel free." I'm unsure if this would have affected the length check

What I was doing:
  • Scalp massages as often as reasonable
  • Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins daily
  • Peppermint/Ampro Oil every other day
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month

What I will continue with:
  • Scalp massages as often as reasonable
  • Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins daily (repurchasing)
  • Peppermint/Ampro Oil every other day (more serious on it)
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month
  • GHE for the last week of the month (with a style that will fit under the cap!)

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 2

Since my hair is not the same length in all places, I took more than one photo which sort of backfired on me as both of these pieces of hair are at line 10. Overall the bulk of my hair is actually at line 9. These little fast lead hairs have made it to my long time goal of waist length! Yay! If this rate of growth continues over the next 4 months of this challenge, I'll make it to tailbone length or something!

What I was doing:
  • Daily scalp massages
  • Maxi Hair Vitamins daily-- My Nature's Bounty gummies ran out half way through
  • Ampro® Pro Styl® Vitamin E Oil w/ Peppermint Oil every other day-- Yemaya oil ran out at the beginning
  • Inversion Method Dec. 1-7th
  • Greenhouse Effect (GHE)  Dec. 28-Jan. 1st
  • Protective Style--Jumbo Twists--during the GHE
I decreased the drops of peppermint oil in the carrier oil down to 10 drops. It did not tingle which I am fine with. I also found the GHE to be more bearable when cut back to just one week. I have just begun the Maxi Hair at the tail end of the month. I can't stand the taste of these things and I already miss my gummies! I am thinking of doing a review of these once I have finished the bottle.

I am curious to know what is causing this growth. As a science teacher there are so many variables that I cannot determine the source of the growth which irritates me. lol. After this challenge I'm going to test each of these things on their own to see what is causing this growth!

What I will continue with:
  • Scalp massages as often as reasonable
  • Country Life Maxi Hair Vitamins daily
  • Peppermint/Ampro Oil every other day
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month
  • Green House Effect (GHE) for the last week of the month
  • Protective style during GHE--more jumbo twist styling

What Is The Hardest Length To Reach?

I'm not sure what website I was on but someone posed the question "What length was the hardest for you to get to?" I thought that is was an interesting question and spent some time going through the responses. It seems that a lot of people experienced the "shoulder length hump" that is often reference in hair blogs and forums. My hypothesis as to why that length is hard to get over is that shoulder length is when you have the new variable of your hair rubbing against your clothing. If your regimen isn't strengthening and moisturizing, this new factor can cause breakage.

My hardest to obtain length has been waist length. It is ever elusive! I have experienced issues with not retaining any length on my journey to waist. I also had my hair straight break off a few inches! It's as if my hair just won't let me be great, lol. I am on the road to recovery and have really been monitoring my hair. I think I'm going to make it this time.

Now, I pose this question to you...
What has been the hardest length for you to achieve? Comment below!

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge | Month 1

What kind of witchcraft is this?! My hair actually grew an inch during this challenge! I'm not sure what to think of this. I am THE skeptic--QUEEN of skeptics. I don't believe much of anything when it comes to "grow hair quick schemes." I even joined this challenge with an unseen roll of the eyes. Now, it's my head that's rolling for doubting this whole thing.

What I was doing:
  • Scalp massages daily--though sometimes I slacked
  • Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nails Gummy Vitamins daily
  • Peppermint added to Au Naturel Soak It Up Oil Cocktail, then Yemaya Gold Healing Hair Oil on my scalp every other day
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month
  • Green House Effect (GHE) for the last 2 weeks of the month
  • Protective styles--high bun then jumbo twists during the GHE

The Green House Effect kind of annoyed me and didn't really add a clear moisturizing benefit to my hair that I could tell. I think that I will reduce that to just the last week of the month. I began the scalp oiling by adding Peppermint Oil to the Au Naturel Soak It Up Oil Cocktail. It was about 15 drops of peppermint to 2oz of carrier oil.

When I ran out of oil I switched to the Yemaya which already has peppermint in it. It did not tingle but I didn't add extra peppermint as the tingling was sort of annoying. This is a lot to keep up with but the results are motivating.

What I will continue with:
  • Scalp massages as often as reasonable
  • NB HSN Gummy Vitamins daily (they will run out next month)
  • Yemaya Gold Healing Hair Oil applied to scalp every other day
  • Inversion Method at the Beginning 7 days of the month
  • Green House Effect (GHE) for the last week of the month
  • Protective style during GHE--probably a bun

6 Inches in 6 Months! Hair Challenge

If you are an avid watcher of hair growth videos on YouTube then you have undoubtedly run across LongNHealthy. She is a lover of growth aids and manages to regularly accelerate her growth rate. It really seems quite magical! In addition to being on YouTube, she is very active on Hairlista where she hosts her 6 Inches in 6 Months challenge.

I decided to join her 3rd round of this challenge for the heck of it. The rules are quite simple. Most of them are things that I already do to maintain the healthy of my hair. The two rules that are out of the box for me are that you must use a growth aid and a growth technique throughout the challenge.

For my growth aids I intend to use hair vitamins and peppermint oil. I already caught the Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nails gummy vitamins on sale about a month ago and have two bottles. When they run out I intend to switch over to Maxi Hair. I decided to do the peppermint oil because I already have regular oil and I already have peppermint oil.

For my growth techniques I intend to do the inversion method at the beginning of every month and the GHE at the end of every month for about two weeks. During these two weeks I will wear a style that I won't mind being damp in the morning like twists or a bun.

Do I actually hope to achieve the 6 inches in 6 months? Nah...However, I think this challenge will cause me to give my hair the TLC it deserves.

Video | STILL MBL?! | October 2015 Length Check

Click the image to be taken to the video
In this video I share the length of my hair after 4 years of being fully natural and 5 1/2 years post relaxer. Though some areas experienced growth, others had a setback. I discuss what I think caused the setback briefly. I'm not 100% with a game plan yet and I'm on the border of ditching hair goals all together.

Wherefore art thou waist length?

Strengthen Your Hair From The Inside Out

Vitamins are great for ensuring that your hair is growing as it should. I have said it before in previous posts and videos that you can't really speed up your hair growth but you can make sure that your body and scalp are healthy. Vitamins are also great for general health. Your body will take what vitamins it needs first and send what's left to your hair and nails anyhow. The following vitamins are great for hair health.

Vitamin C is said to increase hair growth and improve iron absorption. This is great because iron is also said to help the health of your hair. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits. It is also in some non-citrus fruits like raspberries, pineapples, and kiwi.

Niacin is said to increase blood flow to the hair. Many claim that niacin supplements have caused their hair to grow faster. Niacin can be found in meats (fish, turkey, chicken, pork, beef, liver) and peanuts. I may need to supplement this one being a pescetarian!

Biotin helps reduce hair loss. You can find this nutrient in salmon, almonds, peanuts, oats, eggs, onions, etc. The list is long for this one and I already eat my fair share or biotin daily. This is probably why I found that biotin supplements did not do anything special for me.

Zinc is another vitamin that reduces hair loss. It can be found in meats (seafood, beef, lamb, pork, chicken), spinach, mushrooms, and beans.

I'm pretty confident that I get a lot of these in my natural diet. I do see a need to boost my niacin through other means as I do not eat most of those meats listed. Woman can not get Niacin from peanut butter and the occasional fish alone!
What are your thoughts on strengthening your hair through diet? Comment below!
