How to Keep an Effective Hair Journal

Sometimes a hair journey can be overwhelming. Between protein treatments, trims, and mastering styles, it’s hard to keep track of what is helping your hair and what is hurting it. We write down birthdays, appointments, and to-dos to keep track of them. Why not write down things from our hair journey?

Here are some things you should include in a hair journal so that you won’t wake up one day wondering when the last time you did a protein treatment was.

How to Keep an Effective Hair Journal

Regimens

I always like to track my regimen and the changes I make to it. I usually write the techniques, tools, and products that I am using along with the hairstyles that I am primarily wearing. As time passes I make annotations and marks on the page so that I can get a strong visual of how my regimen has changed over time.

Of course after the notes get to be too much, I will rewrite the regimen.

Treatments

I do a quick notation of the date that I do all treatments. This includes protein, coloring, clarifying, etc. If it’s something that isn’t done on a regular basis, it gets noted.

Trims

I also track when I get trims and how much hair was taken off. Though over trimming can be an issue, it’s still important to get regular trims and to stay on top of when you had your last one.

Pictures

I can’t say that I am not the best with taking pictures but I do try to including photos in my hair journal. You can feel like you aren’t making progress but be proved otherwise when you look at photos.

Product Hits/Misses

I am also a little spotty with this one. I always forget to do it! It may be helpful to list product hits and misses or mini-reviews of products. This is going to save you time and money. It will also be easy to see trends in the types of products that your hair likes.

Progress Charts

I just really like charts. There is nothing like seeing the line or the bars going up. Charts can be used to track length retention.

As the title of a popular book goes “Write it Down, Make it Happen.” Keeping track of your hair journey is a step in the right direction toward figuring out what your hair needs and what you have done for it. Accountability is so important.
