What's The Difference? Multi Vitamins vs Hair Vitamins

It's no secret. The hair vitamin industry is booming. It seems like everywhere you turn a new vitamin is being promoted on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. All of these hair vitamin releases are leaving some people confused about the difference between hair vitamins and multivitamins and whether you can take them at the same time or interchangeably.

My most recent video briefly covers this topic. I suggest you do your own research and consult your doctor after viewing this video.

Decrease Detangling Time | 4 Tips

Do you take hours to detangle your hair? If so, these four tips--or more if you count the comments--can help you decrease your detangling time. I don't spend more than 20-30 minutes detangling my hair with the use of these tips.

Yearly Natural Hair Update | 2018

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Every year, I create an update video that address hair goals I set in the previous year and sets new goals for the new year. This update in particular is a very special one for me. As I was preparing to create this video I noticed how different my hair looked between the end of 2016 and the end of 2017. I decided to edit a few of my old clips to share what I noticed with you all. These clips are featured in this most recent update video.

Watch the video: https://youtu.be/LYbYf9mHaXw

In last year's video I mentioned the following:

Protein Treatments
Can you believe that I have not needed a protein treatment in a year? I used to rotate between a moisture based conditioner and a protein conditioner. I also had a strong protein treatment in my back pocket ready to go if necessary. Regularly pulling on my shed hairs to assess their strength has shown me that protein treatments are not necessary for me right now. Perhaps it's the low doses of protein that I get through my regular hair products?

Deep Conditioning
I used to deep condition with rinse out conditioners rather religiously. Toward the end of 2017, I switched over to using actual deep conditioners. May the purists celebrate! Detangling my hair before I deep condition with an instant conditioner allows me to apply less deep conditioner. Therefore, I care less about the higher price tag that comes with deep conditioners. I've been really digging the Mixed Chicks deep conditioner.

Stopping My Growth Methods
These methods work but the reason that we aren't all walking around like Rapunzel is that they take time and effort. I stopped doing these methods about halfway through the year. I've made an effort to rekindle the growth method fire for 2018 but I make no promises.

Simplifying My Regimen
It was a goal of mine to simplify my regimen. I have noticed that the people with the longest hair have the simplest routines. My regimen is extremely simple now. I've narrowed it down to shampoo, instant condition to detangle and brush, deep condition, and style. I now only style with a leave-in and gel.

Mini-Trims
I began doing micro-trims/dusting last year. Every three months I'd twist my hair and assess the ends of each twist. Only the twists that needed a trim got one. Despite the frequency of this I've managed to retain length and have a decent thickness to my hair from root to tip. I do plan to do an all-over 1/2" trim for January.

Maintaining Hair Status
I believe I have maintained my hair over this year and hope to do the same in the coming year.

Eco Styler Series | Olive Oil Gel

Eco Styler is a staple in the unofficial natural hair starter kit. I myself purchased it when I was a new natural. I used it to slick back buns and freeze fros. I wasn't aware that I had hair that could be defined so I never tried it out in that capacity. Now that I'm deeper in my hair journey, I'm trying some of the most popular Eco gels starting with the Olive Oil!

Watch the video: https://youtu.be/fQEPp7TXvgY

Price:
The price for this product varies as much as it's availability. Pick it up for less than $3 at just about any beauty supply, drugstore, grocery store, or big box store. Even in the countriest of country, you can find and purchase this inexpensive gel.

Ingredients:
It's not natural if that's what you're looking for. The top 5 ingredients have been highlighted as they are the most present in the product.

Water (Aqua), Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glycerin, Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), CI 19140 Yellow 5 - Love and Pride.

Smell:
The scent is very masculine. It blends right in with the manly scent of my current leave-in conditioner. I will say that it is not as strong of a scent as some of the other Eco gels I'll be bringing in this series and it dissipates as it dries.

Experience:
This gel went on my hair a lot smoother than I remember eco styler going. I was even able to style my hair in the larger sections I sometimes get away with and it glided through very nicely. My ends were in shock and did not curl up like they do with my usual gel. I sat under the drier with my hair plopped into a scarf to fix this situation.

Though this gel seems to readily rinse on wash day, I do feel as though it leaves a coating on my hair. It isn't a gel-like coating but it does feel like something is still on my hair after I shampoo. My hair lasts right up to the mid-week mark with this gel and not a day more!

#NoProductChallenge

Do you know what your hair looks like dry, with no product? Had you asked me that before I took this challenge, my answer would have been "no." I was afraid of what my hair would look like. I thought it'd be super uneven and dry.

I was quite surprised that this was not the case for my hair when I took on the #NoProductChallenge.

See what happened: https://youtu.be/bv5ySN4zU-Y

I challenge you to take up the challenge for yourself. Make sure to let me know so that I can drool 🤤 over your product free hair!

My Shed Hair Had Begun to Loc

You know, locs are beautiful. They can be styled in so many different ways, be all types of colors, and take hard work and dedication to cultivate. That being said, I'm not too keen on locs spontaneously forming in my loose natural hair.

From time to time, I have found these small loc-like formations made of shed hair trapped in my strands. It is because of this that I have decided to bring brushing back into my hair regimen. So far, no shed-locs!

Paul Mitchell Original The Conditioner Review

Watch the video: https://youtu.be/5QOCk6fGgcc

I feel so fancy with this Paul Mitchell salon product in my arsenal! Paul Mitchell is a salon brand that is not ridiculously priced nor ridiculously hard to find. I have purchased this conditioner more than once at Ulta stores.

Price: 10.14oz - $10.99, 16.9oz - $16.25, 33.8oz - $25
You won't necessarily have to pay this if you stalk Ulta's deals which are frequent

Ingredients:
Not the most natural. There's a water soluble silicone so you won't get buildup. Loads of extracts in the middle of the ingredients. I'm cool with it though.

Smell:
Paul is delivering soap bar swag with this one. It has a slight herbal scent but it's also very soap-like as well. I mean all of this in a good way! The scent fades as the hair dries and other products are added. My hair usually smells like my instant conditioner that I detangle with and not the Paul Mitchell conditioner.

Appearance:
I don't normally have this category on my reviews but it's necessary for this one. This conditioner is BRIGHT BLUE! Child, it's toothpaste blue. It was alarming to say the least but I was soon calmed down. This product smooths into the hair clear! I can wear my wet wash and go out of my house and not get side eyes from people trying to figure out why my hair is white!

Performance:
Slip. I could really just end it there. This conditioner coats the hair well like a thick conditioner but it's slim, tho! I am able to quickly and easily spread this conditioner throughout my hair. It softens up my hair and keeps it moisturized throughout the week. It also works well with any gel that I've tried with it.

Shop With Me | Black Friday

I love Black Friday! However, I don't leave my house and neither do I hunt down electronics and toys. Black Friday is one of the few times a year that I buy things for myself. Yup! I do not spend a cent on anyone else on this mega shopping day. That has mostly to do with who I am shopping for and the types of gifts I get. I'm willing to pay full price for family and friends.

What do I buy on Black Friday? Hair products. All of the "boutique" brands are significantly slashed and in many cases offering free shipping. Plus, if I don't buy conditioner and gel for myself, no one else will! I remember someone telling me that asking for hair products for Christmas is like asking for toothpaste. As a natural hair blogger/vlogger, I'd have to disagree with that sentiment. I'd LOVE to get all the things I just bought as gifts.

This Black Friday I shopped with Hydra Hair Care, Naturally Curly, TGIN, She Scent It, Curl Origin, Mixed Chicks, and Soultanicals. I will do my normal haul video where I discuss the products and give links to exactly what I bought. Watch for that in December.

Tresemme Naturals Conditioner Is a Scammer!

For those of you familiar with my channel during my Maximum Hydration Phase, you'll know that I used to use Tresemme Naturals conditioner religiously. I purchased bottle after bottle and the rinse out conditioner became my leave-in of choice.

While using Tresemme Naturals as a leave in I tried several gels and was pleased with the results. I'm now questioning every gel I tried during that period. I was blinded by the conditioner!

Watch the video: https://youtu.be/ky1-RCqGRFE

A note: I no longer use Tresemme conditioner as the company tests on animals. Check out some cruelty free options on my kit, here.

A Week in My Hair

Usually what you see on my channel are product reaction videos filmed on washday with fresh results. Also, I tend to film my other types of videos earlier in the week so that my hair looks good. In my new video, I do a video diary to show what happens to my hair over a span of 6 days.

If you enjoyed this video, be sure to share it so that I get the impression that folks want to see more like this. lol.

Video | KCCC Revisited | I Had to Retire It!

Kinky-Curly Curling custard is considered a holy grail when it comes to type 4 wash and gos. It was definitely served that place in my regimen when I first began to wear my hair in wash and gos. After over a year of primarily wearing wash and gos, I decided to pick it up again to reaffirm my love. But...um...watch the video!

I've heard the sentiment that it is hard to find products that are cruelty free or that do not include animal ingredients. I made this video to show that it isn't as hard as you may think! You may already use some or many of these brands already.

Video | How to De-Stash Your Hair Products

I understand the allure of a new hair product or brand as much as anyone else does. I'm also a youtuber so it may have come as a shock when I shared my very small stash of hair products in an earlier video. I know that some may have come away from that video seeing the vast difference between my stash and their own and wondering "how?"

How can someone get to such a small hair collection? In my most recent video I offer up practical tips to help you cut the hair product clutter and free up some space.

Video | Super Wet Hair Gel - First Impression

This past weekend, I put up a new video in which I tried out another Mexican gel. Those familiar with my channel know how much I love Wetline Xtreme and it was that love that made me give Super Wet a try. While the video was a first impression, I did tinker with the gel on another washday and the update is below! 😊

Prior to filming this video my hair had been through a few things that were out of the norm:
  • Clarifying
  • Oil/Conditioner pre-detangling
  • Brushing
  • Twists/Twist out
I also thought that my new Paul Mitchell The Conditioner was so slippery that I applied less conditioner than I normally would. The only consistent thing about this wash and go was the amount of gel I applied. Needless to say these things did have an effect on the final look.

My hair had definition that did not go all the way to the roots, it was soft to the touch but yet dry at the same time, and produced flakes as it aged. I got barely 5 days out of the ordeal. Now, fast forward to a week later.

My definition goes much closer to the roots than when I originally used this gel, my hair feels much softer, and there is not a gel particle floating in the air as I move my hair about. Conditioner makes a BIG difference with this gel.

I still stand by what I said in the original first impression though. This gel can hold a candle to Wetline somewhat in definition. However, it gives a softer hold which will invite some frizz and shave off the amount of days you can get out of the look. Super Wet is NOT a buildable gel. I've found that one does not simply apply more and get a harder hold.

Wetline has spoiled me with wash and gos that can be worn nearly two weeks! I'm predicting that this application of Super Wet will give me just a single week, which is okay.

I also find the shine comment to still be true. My hair is not dull or coated looking. It just looks like....hair. I have also been spoiled by a shiny look to my wash and gos.

This gel can stand in if I just couldn't find my precious Wetline, but it won't be replacing it.

Video | Summer Empties 2017

It's that time yet again to do my seasonal empties video. I love finishing products and honestly think we need to promote finishing products in the natural hair community. So many people have huge product stashes that they dip into here and there but never really use.

I think my empties are getting shorter as I stream line what I use on my hair.

As always, all of the products can be checked out in my Kit for the video: https://kit.com/WhatTheKink/summer-empties-2017 If there is a video for that product, it's linked in the kit too.

Video | Let's Talk | Natural Hair Shrinkage

Shrinkage is a property of natural hair that causes it to shrink as it dries. Many people try to avoid shrinkage by doing various stretching techniques, blow drying their hair, or trying anti-shrinkage products. It has become almost expected that you stretch your hair after you do a wash and go.

I am not a natural that particularly cares about shrinkage but I am interested in hearing why it is concerning to others.
